Success for “Failure” and other Pulitzer Prize-related news

Congratulations to Philip Schultz (B.A., 1967), the winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. Schultz, who earned his degree in English at SF State, received the award for his collection of poems titled “Failure.”

Meanwhile, Jose Antonio Vargas (B.A., 2004) was a member of the prize-winning team of Washington Post staffers who won the Pulitzer for Breaking News Reporting for their coverage of the mass shooting at Virginia Tech.

Congratulations to both graduates!

Maxine Chernoff’s poem comes to life

Creative Writing Chair Maxine Chernoff’s “Lost and Found” is now available as a short film on the Poetry Foundation Web site, part of their “Poetry Everywhere” project.

Pultizer Prize-finalist Susan Griffin (B.A.,’65; M.A.,’72) reads from her new book, “Wrestling with the Angel of Democracy: On Being an American Citizen” (Trumpeter Books, ’08), on Wednesday, April 9, 7:30 p.m. at Kepler’s Books in Menlo Park.

 

 

Alumna and Creative Writing Professor Toni Mirosevich reads from her nonfiction collection ”Pink Harvest” (MidList Press, ‘08) and is joined by writers Page McBee and Mary DeNardo, a poet and teacher at SF State, Thursday, April 10, 7:30 pm at Books Inc in the Castro (2275 Market Street @16th, San Francisco).

Alumnus Peter Nachtrieb’s new play, “Boom,” just premiered at New York’s Ars Nova and received this positive review from the New York Times’ Ben Brantley.

New doc from Alison Victor, Tune in tonight for more on Albirda Rose’s latest honor

Alumna Alison Victor’s new film, “Ed’s Inner Space: The Genoa Remote Guidance System for the Blind,” will screen at 6:30 p.m. on Yuri’s Night, April 12 ay NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA. The film focuses on Ed Gallagher, a visual artist who slowly lost his sight over the course of eight years. Inspired by space technology, he developed the Genoa remote guidance system for the blind.

Congratulations to alumnus Rick Croy, men’s basketball coach at Citrus College, on leading his team to the California Community College State Championship!

Alumnus Chris Bocast made a big splash in the Bay Area in the mid-80’s as the guitarist for New Wave band Tokyo Vogue. After that band broke up, he toured as a bassist for seminal English band The Mission U.K. What’s he up to now? Visit his Web site to take a listen to his latest album getting steady airplay on XM Radio.
